WHO WE ARE

BACKGROUND

Michael Klubock, the Founder and Executive Director of The Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education, is a sailor turned environmental educator. His love for the beaches and oceans inspired the creation of a school assembly education effort to get more kids to the beach and in touch with nature. While developing and presenting the program to the schools, he personally funded and established the Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education. Partnerships with the California Coastal Commission's Adopt-A-Beach Program, Heal the Bay, the California Department of Conservation, the Los Angeles Urban Resources Partnership, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, UCLA Ocean Discovery Center and the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Project have contributed greatly to expanding the program. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) presented Michael Klubock with the Walter B. Jones Memorial Award for Excellence. The award recognized his outstanding commitment to integrating cultural and ethnic diversity into coastal and marine management programs. The City of Los Angeles presented a Certificate of Commendation to Michael for outstanding contributions and dedication to educate and motivate the students of the Northeast San Fernando Valley.

The Malibu Foundation's Adopt-A-Beach School Assembly Program has reached almost 462,000 California school children since October 1991 with close to 58,000 participating in many Adopt-A-Beach clean-ups. A total of about 400,000 cans were recycled to help pay for buses. Almost 400 schools have taken advantage of the program in this short time frame. More schools have requested the program and the demand continues to grow.
